Zdenek Felix was born in 1938 in what is now the Czech Republic. He is an art historian and was Exhibition Director at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, then Director of the Kunsteverein in Munich for many years before in 1991 being appointed Director of the Deichtorhallen Museum in Hamburg.
