Description
Over 90% of the foreign exchange earnings of the Nigerian economy depend on oil and gas export and in addition, domestic utilization adds significantly to the nation's economy. The upstream oil exploration and exploitation companies and the downstream petrochemical, refining and liquefied natural gas industries are therefore the backbone of the economy. Many international oil companies did not give dequate attention to the frontier onshore (inland basins) of Nigeria, of which the Upper Benue Trough is a part, perhaps because these companies have poor understanding of the geology of the basins and probably because of the far distance between these basins and the existing petroleum infrastructure in the Niger Delta region.
