A Book of Lesson Ideas

AUTHOR Shotts, Galen
PUBLISHER Createspace Independent Publishing Platform (12/18/2017)
PRODUCT TYPE Paperback (Paperback)

Description
The most important lesson I learned came from the students themselves. It was their fear to be wrong. When I learned that then I realized all my unit plans needed a feature for the students to practice new concepts with the safety net of no severe repercussions. They wouldn't get a major grade nor even an "F" if we were in the practice stage (the exception is simply not doing the work). I truly believe that all students possess the ability to work at the highest (deepest) level if given the necessary impetus. All young people want to learn and understand about life and all students know and understand that there needs to be academic learning. The former provides the reason for the latter. Additionally, all students want to demonstrate they are smart. If teachers continue to work at the lower levels, then students become conditioned to respond at the Recall and Skills Levels of Webb's DOK. Most students can work at the Extended Learning Level if given the support and the safety of failure to achieve to that level. Finally, all of the lessons presented are for high school grades. Some, however, were based originally on middle school lessons and adapted for the classes I was teaching. Some of the ideas originated in other disciplines. Adapting ideas to meet your needs is key to successful lesson planning. I make no apology for this being a collection of English/Language Arts units as that is what I taught. I do know the lesson plan format can be adapted to other disciplines by those willing to make the effort. Again, adapting is the key to successful lesson planning.
