Past visitors left traces of a land that once featured mule trains, prehistoric campsites, a sawmill, commercial fishing, an old-growth forest of pines and cypress removed for lumber, a turpentine gathering operation, ancient burials, hundreds of acres of farmland, and even a small river village. A massive prehistoric shell construction stands among the oldest human constructions in the United States.

Bonita Bay's wildlife contains over eighty species of birds and countless examples of native plants easily seen along paved walking paths.
