This research effort focuses on whether NATO should adopt a suspension process which could be invoked against a member that no longer complies with the fundamental principles of NATO. Firsts it begins by examining how the North Atlantic Treaty came into force and describes calls for inclusion of a provision for suspension during the original drafting of the Treaty. Second, it analyzes current arguments in favor of and opposed to providing for a membership suspension process. Filially, it concludes by presenting the author's recommendation that a process for membership suspension should not be adopted.
